Krishna Janmashtami means the birthday of Lord Krishna. The festival is also known by other names like Gokulashtami, Krishna Jayanti, Krishnashtami, Sri Krishna Jayanti, and Janmashtami. Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated as a yearly Hindu festival that observes the birthday of Lord Krishna who is considered to be the eighth form of Lord Vishnu. The religious celebration of Krishna Janmashtami is a public holiday in several states and thus, is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm and joy among all people.

It is believed as per mythological stories that Lord Krishna was born as a human being inside a prison in the Yadava community of Mathura. Krishna was born to king Vasudeva and queen Devaki as their eighth son. However, since Krishna’s life was in danger to his maternal uncle Kamsa, his father Vasudeva took him from the prison to his friend’s (Nanda) house in Gokula in order to exchange him with his friend’s newborn girl. Vasudeva took the decision as he heard a divine voice and heavenly energy that helped him escape from the prison to do the act. Thus, Lord Krishna grew up in his early years addressing Nanda and Yashoda as his parents in Gokul and Vrindavan.
Date and time of the festival:
Krishna Janmashtami is usually celebrated every year on the eighth day of the month of Bhadrapada in India. This year, Janmashtami will start on 18th August 2022, Thursday and end on 19th August 2022, Friday. The Ashtami Tithi starts at 9.20 pm on 18th August and ends on 19th August 2022 at 10.59 pm. The Laddu Gopal pooja is performed during this timing of Ashtami tithi.
How to celebrate Krishna Janmashtami 2022:
Vidhi or rituals of performing the Krishna Janmashtami pooja differs from community to community in India. Usually, the idol of Lord Krishna is situated in a cradle and prayed on this day. Lord Krishna is also offered butter and sugar. Some devotees keep a whole-day fast and break the fast only after the pooja and prasad distribution is done. On the occasion of Janmashtami, songs of Lord Krishna in the form of bhajans, kirtans, devotional hymns, and aarti are done by devotees. Kids are also dressed like Lord Krishna and Devi Radha so that they can perform dances to the songs of Lord Krishna and Devi Radha.
In several parts of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, the festival of Dahi Handi is practiced a day after Janmashtami. People make a huge pyramid of humans so that they can break the bowl of butter or curd tied above and get prize money or gifts. The day is celebrated as a symbol of truth and goodness always winning over evil and negativity.
