World Mental Health Day 2023: How Much Free Are You To Talk About Mental Health?

World Mental Health Day is on 10th October 2022, today. The day aims to spread awareness about mental health issues and mental health services offered all over the world. This year, World Mental Health Day’s theme is “Make Mental Health and well-being for all a global priority”. Mental Health issues have become a global concern these days.

With the advancement of technology, there are many things changing in people’s lives, be it a common man’s life or a rich person’s lifestyle. Status, power, and influence are no doubt certain things that people chase throughout their lives. But how much is enough and where should we draw the line, is something people have to think about, rethink and decide. However, not all are born or trained geniuses and thus, they do make errors in judgment and evaluation.

Eventually, Mental health gets affected giving rise to problems like stress, anxiety, depression, and other chronic disorders. There was a time when people used to deny talking about mental health issues with others. Relationship troubles used to arise even in olden times among relatives, parents and children, and between married couples when people involved in such relationships suffered from stress in any or all spheres of their lives, panic attacks, anxiety problems, depressed feelings, loneliness, imbalanced emotions, etc. When extreme negative feelings manifested in physical illnesses that’s when people used to approach doctors, otherwise, mental health and emotional issues were considered to be taboo subjects to talk about or even discuss.

Until the development of medical science, people fell into the traps of orthodox beliefs and superstitions about people suffering from mental health. When medical science developed to provide people relief in terms of managing their mental illnesses, that’s when mental health got the attention of the media and common people alike. When Bollywood superstars Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt, and Anushka Sharma, came upfront to share how they also had emotional issues despite being top celebrities and having successful careers, that’s when people came out of the stigmas attached to mental health issues.

Thus, these and many other celebrities set an example of how to make use of our mental health to become more stronger and courageous rather than developing fears and worries.

This is a personal note to those who suffer from mental health issues but do not accept or acknowledge their problems because of societal pressure.

“Shame no more to share how vulnerable you feel when you are demotivated by others or are facing emotional trouble in your life. You don’t have to hide behind doors just because your feelings don’t match with those of others who are always smiling and showing off that they are happy.

If you are sad, share it. If you are happy, express it. No one is born the same or perfect way. Everyone is imperfect and once you accept this fact, you will be able to live life to the fullest.

Suicide or a failed life can be prevented by people who really care for you and want you to enjoy the beautiful journey of life. So, next time, when you feel like the end of the world, get up from your bed and talk to an expert in the mental health field. You never know how getting therapy or counseling advice can give a new meaning to your life.”
